Mattresses

Hülsta manufacture two different groups of mattress: steel sprung and foam. All mattresses have a maximum life expectancy of around 8 years (possibly 2 years less on electrically adjustable slats), this is when the fillings start to break down. Natural fibres such as hair, cotton, felt and wool breakdown even quicker. This is due to contact with moisture lost from the body whilst sleeping and also with bed bugs etc. With all this going on it is not surprising that mattresses with removable covers are becoming more and more popular.

As a general rule the steel sprung mattresses are firmer and sleep cooler, this is because of there construction, the springs almost act like 'bellows', because of their firmer surface, less of the body is in contact with the mattress. Sprung mattresses are still very popular in the UK.

Hulsta highly recommend the foam-based mattresses, as they work well with the adjustable slatted bases. They are available in various densities, but are generally softer than the sprung mattresses. Also they sleep warmer, because they are softer, more of the body is in contact with the mattress. Hülsta promote this factor as there research shows this promotes better and healthier sleep. hulsta use a polymer called Rumatex in there foam mattresses, this has similar properties to Gore-tex, which is used to make water proof clothing breathable. This property aids moisture transfer, as on average each person loses 1 pint of moisture whilst sleeping during the night. These mattresses are actually 95% air!

All of the mattresses now have removable covers and can be machine washed at up to 60 degrees Celsius. As these are large items it is recommended that to avoid possible problems or damage this is undertaken professionally. Most of the mattresses with removable covers are also suitable for allergy sufferers as they are constructed from 100% man made fibres.

Most of the mattresses vary in their construction over their length, some have 5 zones and others more. This is to allow varying support as different areas of the body need different levels of support. However, they are all symmetrical in their construction so can be turned as often as desired.

The Hulsta sleeping system is a marriage between the slatted base and the mattress. Some combinations are more suitable than others. In the UK articulating slatted bases (with electric motors) are very popular. In this situation we recommend foam based mattresses, as they are generally more flexible.

All the mattresses are available in different sizes, the common sizes sold are 80, 90 and 100 wide by 200 cm long. However, there are many other sizes available generally in 10 or 20 cm increments for width and length. All of these mattresses are guaranteed for 3 years.

Other special sized mattresses are available on request, Although hülsta do not recommend them hülsta are able to offer double mattresses as a special product, but because of their size they do not have the 3-year guarantee.

Please remember that when you first sleep on any new mattress it is unlikely that it will sleep comfortably immediately. It can take approximately 2 - 4 weeks for your body to adjust to a different lying surface.
